Nelsonville City Council recommends new police chief at last night's meeting

More than 40 people crowded into Nelsonville's City Hall last night to attend the continuation of Monday night's regular City Council meeting.

Council President Clinton Stanley said Monday night that the meeting would reconvene on Thursday to allow Garry Hunter, the city's attorney, to be present for an executive session addressing police personnel issues and the city manager's office.

Nelsonville City Manager Fred Holmes reported to council on the progress of the search committee to hire a new police chief.

I'd like to thank the committee for their hard work

Holmes said. We voted unanimously to recommend Tommy McKnight as the new police chief.

However, council announced that it would not take action on the committee's recommendation until Hunter has the opportunity to do a background check on all the candidates.

After a narrow vote of 4 to 3, council members convened in a closed-door executive session for approximately 45 minutes. No mention of the city manager's office was made during the open portion of last night's meeting, until Stanley asked council members to complete performance evaluations for the position by the next regular session.

In other council news, council members voted unanimously to adopt a resolution to oppose a proposal by Gov. Bob Taft to reduce local government and library funds by 20 percent.

We're broke as it is and they are going to cut 20 percent more Councilman Bill Wend said. I think we should pass this [resolution] and send it off.

Council Vice President Greg Smith agreed.

Whether [Taft's proposal] passes or not I can't remember a worse governor in my life; I'm really disappointed

Smith said. His grandpa must be spinning in his grave.

Council also voted unanimously to adopt an ordinance approving the Solid Waste Management Plan for the Athens-Hocking solid waste district.

The ordinance did not require any new financial obligations and that the plan simply changes the way recycling is calculated for the district, Holmes said.
