Today marks the start of Ohio University's Pride Week, a weeklong series of events celebrating Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender pride organized by the LGBT Affairs Commission of Student Senate.
I think it's important for both gay and non-gay people to know how many people there are to support them
said Justin Maxwell, president of ALLY, a group that strives for equal treatment of minorities, especially Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender students.
Maxwell's group helped to organize a mass statement Wednesday in which students will wear T-shirts that read Gay? Fine by me. The project is part of a national movement organized by the Web site www.finebyme.org.
Other events for Pride Week include the Out & About coming out discussion group Tuesday at The South Pole, a Pride Variety Show and Date Auction Wednesday at Baker Ballroom and a Traditional Family Values dance Saturday at Casa Nueva, 4 W. State St., for which participants are encouraged to dress up as their favorite traditional family value.
Other organizations involved with Pride Week are Open Doors; Swarm of Dykes; United Campus Ministry; The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Programs Center; Planned Parenthood and Circle of Friends.
