I am so sick of the ongoing religious debate against the practice of homosexuality. It seems that throughout the history of Christianity, we have been committing horrific acts against our fellow human beings under the guise of Christ. The Crusades were waged under the pretense of reclaiming the holy land. European colonization subjugated and decimated entire populations of people under the canopy of saving them through conversion to Christianity. The practice continues today with Christian condemnation of homosexuals as sinful and destructive.
I almost laughed when I read in Wednesday's Post (Conservatives initiate 'Day of Truth' to counter gay-supportive 'Day of Silence
' April 13) about the newly organized, nationwide Day of Truth initiated by religious conservatives to counteract the gay community's supportive Day of Silence. I found it especially ironic that the religious groups that organized Day of Truth are trying to counteract a movement that was organized to protest against harassment and violence.
It seems that certain Christian groups have chosen to discard Christian ideals of tolerance and love in favor of discrimination, condemnation and hatred. If this nation is going to hate homosexuals, then so be it. But we should at least have the decency to admit that our hatred stems from our own fear, ignorance and bigotry. Can't we please leave Christ out of it?
