After four non-conference games in two days, the Ohio softball team is still searching for answers on offense as they prepare to face Kent State.
The Bobcats (13-25 overall, 0-8 Mid-American Conference) split the four non-conference games. A lack of offense hurt Ohio in the two losses. That has been the theme all season for the Bobcats as Ohio has scored 26 runs in their 25 losses.
Despite the numbers, utility player Jennifer Tisevish said the team is improving.
We're still hitting the ball better
she said. I guess we're realizing more and more that situational hitting is going to be our big key getting the hits when we need them and getting the ball on the ground instead of in the air.
Coach Roanna Brazier said a key to getting the offense going is to get the lead-off batter on base.
When we get our first batter on of the inning we have a tendency to score most of the time
she said.
Tisevich is the only Bobcat with an average over .300 and the only one with more than one home run. She also leads the team with 23 RBI's. She batted .500 (6-12) with seven RBIs in the first four games of the seven-game home stand.
After Wednesday, Ohio had played seven games in four consecutive days. Utility player Robin Miller said the couple days off before the game can help the offense.
It'll be nice to get in the cages and work on some different pitches and see what we can do to come out against Kent and really take it to Kent
she said.
Kent State (15-16, 3-2 MAC) is a team that has not struggled at the plate as much as Ohio has. The Golden Flashes are ranked third in the MAC in team average at .273. They feature six players who are batting around or over the .300 mark.
Ashley Ball leads the Golden Flashes with a .390 batting average. Ashley Fairhurst is first among hitters on the team in RBIs, with 16. Jessica Toocheck and Kim Hamilton have both hammered three home runs on the season.
Tisevich said the series is important for Ohio to get a first conference win. We really
really need to come away with a win
get that first win on Saturday
she said. Build up our confidence a little bit.
The first pitch for the Bobcats' Saturday doubleheader against Kent State is scheduled for 1 p.m. while Sunday's game is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Ohio Softball field.
