Spring sports have sprung

Athens weather during spring quarter is a hippie's -I mean any college student's paradise.

It happens every year (if you can believe it); the days get longer, the temperature rises and the grass gets greener. Along with the hippies of course, this is -more specifically-any sports fan or athlete's dream come true.

Spring signifies the start or resurrection of many sports like baseball, football (spring drills of course), softball and lacrosse.

Not only do these sports start anew, but many lesser known activities and past times emerge from the semi-underground status they hold and rekindle friendships of roommates, buddies from down the hall and near strangers. Here is a look at some of them: Tossing the old pigskin in the middle of East Green Drive and trying not to hit anyone passing by, throwing the Hail Mary all the way from Bush to Shively or just a little triangle of friends passing it around.

Or you can always play a scaled down version of beach volleyball on the sandy area by Nelson dining hall. You can hear the hollow echo of every hit as you approach the oddly placed patch of sand.

Then there are the pickup basketball games on the courts in front of Brown. You know you are in college when you are on your way back to the dorm at one in the morning and you hear the thump of a basketball against the pavement. What's better then a late night game of 21?

Now, if you're for the higher level of entertainment you can zing around a Frisbee or even dabble in the game known as Ultimate. Despite this game's popularity in Athens, I'm tired of almost having my head taken off by uncontrolled flying discs. It might just be me, but I'm pretty sure the only things that should play with Frisbees are dogs.

Another time-killer is to head over to West green and kick around the soccer ball or partake in a game of cornhole -I swear every time I pass the horseshoe area one of the two is going on.

If you are more into old school playground games you can jump into a round of foursquare by Washington. Whoever created this brilliantly simple game should be working for NASA.

And finally, sunbathing. Even though it really doesn't involve anything physical, sunbathing is the best reason to live on South green for women -and men if you catch my drift.

So ladies and gents, enjoy your spring quarter and all the activities that come with it.
