Two parties applied to run in this year's Student Senate elections -but senate confirmed only one as qualified to campaign.
The Vision party, headed by current City and County Affairs Senator Brian Footer, will be the only party competing in the elections, said Natalie Pariano, chair of the Board of Elections for Student Senate, which made the decision yesterday.
The other party, OUnity, was disqualified because it is not a registered student organization, Pariano said. Members of the party can campaign individually. She could not give details of the decision yesterday but would be available for comment today.
Footer said the Vision party includes members of the Boston Tea Party and the KEG (Keeping Education Grand) Party, which both ran in last year's elections.
Dominic Barbato (who ran as president of the KEG Party) is running on our ticket as our off-campus senator
and Mark Mecum (who ran as president of the Boston Tea Party) is also running on our ticket as the Graduate Student Senate nominee Footer said.
Drew Taylor, who was going to run in the OUnity party, said the decision was unfair because no one from senate explained the requirements necessary to campaign. He said he received the application papers and was told all he needed to do was fill them out.
Now we can't campaign under our party name Taylor said. I have to run as Drew Taylor
senator of Arts and Sciences. We can't raise money as a party; we have to raise money as individuals.
