Track struggles at Oxford meet

Three first-place finishes were not enough for the Ohio track and field team as both the men and women finished last at the Southern Cup Invitational this weekend.

The Bobcats returned from Oxford having fallen to the Bearcats and the Redhawks. The men and women both earned 88 points during the weekend. Cincinnati took the title in the men's division while the Bearcats and Miami shared the women's title with 154 points each.

Two of the first place finishes came from the Bobcat women. Continuing her winning ways, Jericka Duncan came in first in the 100-meter hurdles. She also placed second in the 400-meter hurdles.

Carime Reinhart took the other top spot for the women in the 5000-meter run. She finished 23 seconds ahead of the pack.

Other scorers for the women included sprinter Aileen Taylor, who took second place in the 800-meter run. Distance runner Lauren Birnie also took the second spot in the steeplechase.

Taylor said that despite the team coming in third place, individually, the meet was a good one.

The team did well considering the weather

said Taylor who ran a 2:18.90 in the 800-meter. We had a positive attitude toward the meet and everyone tried individually.

Out in the field, thrower Jaclyn Lugaila took second in two events, the shot put and hammer throw, and fellow thrower Chelsea Stephan landed third in the javelin throw.

For the men, it was John Willis who led the Bobcats again. Willis took first in the 400-meter dash.

Sprinter Dustin Holm placed third in the 100-meter dash and fourth in 200-meter dash.

The distance team had their share of scorers as Bob Wayner took third in the 1500-meter run. In the 5000 Craig Leon and Austin Schiele placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Brian List and Brian King took second and third, respectively, in the steeplechase.

Wayner said that everyone went out to the track just to do their best. The weather conditions made it hard for anyone to try getting a regional qualifying time.

To tell you the truth the weather wasn't that great Wayner said. It was about getting out there and doing your best. No one was shooting for regional times. For me it was just getting a place.

Pole vaulter Boone Troyer took second place while jumper Luke High landed third in the triple jump.

The Bobcats are home next weekend for the Bobcat Invitational on Saturday.
