The women's golf teem took fourth out of 19 teams this weekend at the Indiana Women's Invitational by shooting a 36-hole total of 635.
Saturday's opening round was cancelled due to heavy morning rain. This left the course extremely wet, making the play on Saturday afternoon more of a challenge. Another obstacle facing the players was winds of up to 40 mph.
It was extremely difficult. The wind made a three-to-four-club difference
and sometimes it made your ball move when you were putting senior Sara Ann Palmer said on her way home from the tournament.
The Bobcats fought through the challenging conditions on Saturday to shoot a 323, which was good for fourth place. On Sunday, Ohio retained fourth place, shooting a 312 and giving them their second top five finish of the spring season.
However, while a fourth place finish may sound nice, the Bobcats were anticipating a better result.
We were expecting to do better but we'll take fourth place
Palmer said.
Notre Dame won the tournament with relative ease by firing a 312 on Saturday and following that up with a 308 on Sunday, for a total of 620. Their nearest competitor, Grand Valley State, had a two-day total of 629, and The University of Minnesota edged out the Bobcats for third by just one stroke, shooting a 634.
Ohio's 635 was good enough to sneak past The University of Toledo as well as Marshall University, with both teams finishing one stroke behind the Bobcats, who finished as the best team from the Mid-American Conference.
Junior Julie Tomlinson paced the Bobcats, following up an 82 on Saturday with a 75 on Sunday. Those scores were good enough for an eleventh place finish.
The rest of the team was not far behind, as Palmer and sophomore Shanna Siefke were two strokes back, both shooting a two-day total of 159.
Rounding out the scoring for the team were sophomore Kristen Mautz, with a 162, junior Ana Brown with a 163, and sophomore Meredith Waterston, who posted a 166.
Noriko Nakazaki of Notre Dame was the individual winner of the tournament, carding a 71-75-146 on the 6,142-yard par 72 course. She just slipped past Toledo's Natalie Storck, who had a two day total of 147.
The Bobcats will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va. for the James Madison University Lady Dukes Invitational.
