Man arrested after car crash on Mill Street

Ohio State Highway Patrol arrested a 23-year-old Athens man yesterday after the man fled police and crashed his car into an apartment complex on Mill Street.

The man, Mateusz Lozykowski, was charged with failure to control, operating under the influence and fleeing and eluding law enforcement.

Police initially tried to stop Lozykowski for speeding on US Route 33, but Lozykowski did not yield, according to a police report. After a police pursuit, Lozykowski attempted to turn right on Mill Street, drove off the left side of the road and struck the curb, trees, a bike rack and the apartment complex at 140 Mill Street. No injuries were reported.

Roy C. Whitmore, who owns the property, said he saw moderate damage to trees, lights that shine on the building and the building itself, but he had not assessed a dollar value.

It looks like there's some landscaping damage

Whitmore said. The main thing is nobody got hurt.

Lozykowski was arraigned this morning in Athens City Municipal Court. He has a preliminary hearing set for 1:30 p.m. May 19 for the failure to control and operating under the influence charges. The fleeing and eluding law enforcement is a felony charge and will likely be handled in the Athens County Court of Common Pleas.
