Ohio falls to Vanderbilt

The Ohio baseball team could not overcome a Vanderbilt rally in the sixth inning that produced six runs, falling 13-4 at Bob Wren Stadium last night.

Ohio coach Joe Carbone said the game could have been different if they were able to get the final out in the inning.

We gave up six runs

he said. It was the ballgame for six innings. If we had gotten one more out maybe we could have been in the ballgame for all nine innings.

Zeke Isaacs (2-3), who came into the game in the third, gave up three straight singles to start the sixth before being replaced by Dan Weiss.

Weiss allowed three runs on three hits before being replaced by reliever Yale Silverman. Silverman pitched 2-and-a-third scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two batters.

Right-hander Brent DeCoster relieved Silverman in the top of the ninth and was roughed up for three runs as Vanderbilt added to their lead.

The Bobcats (24-22-1 overall, 8-8-1 Mid-American Conference) got on the board first when Anthony Gressick hit a solo homerun to center field.

Vanderbilt answered with three runs in the top of the second, and Ohio tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

Jon Vondrell led off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a single to left off the bat of Brian Colopy. Brian White advanced both runners with the Bobcats' third hit of the inning. A wild pitch by the Vanderbilt pitcher allowed Colopy and Dusty Hammond to cross the plate.

The Commodores scored another run in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead, but Ohio tied it back up in the bottom half of the inning.

Vondrell led off the inning with a single to left, advanced on a Colopy sacrifice bunt and scored on a White single up the middle. That was the final time Ohio would score a run.

Vanderbilt pitchers Ryan Mullins and Jeff Sues held Ohio to one hit over the last five innings .

Vondrell, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored, said he did not change his approach at the plate from his 6-for-12 performance over the weekend against IPFW.

I was just still sitting on the fastball. In the first two at-bats I got two hits on two pitches

so I pretty much hit the first one they stick in there.

The Bobcats close out their home schedule this afternoon against Vanderbilt at 4 p.m. at Bob Wren Stadium.
