RedHawks enter MAC tourney as top seed

The Miami Redhawks' baseball team (39-15, 17-4 MAC) won the Mid-American Conference for the first time since 1983 after the final conference weekend and will host the MAC tournament as the top seed.

The tournament will take place Wednesday through Saturday with the winner advancing to the NCAA tournament.

Final baseball honors announced The MAC announced its final East and West Division Players and Pitchers of the Week on Monday.

Miami first baseman Paul Frietch was named the East Division Player of the Week for the second time in his career. Frietch hit .458 (11-for-24) on the week, scoring eight runs and nine RBIs -seven in the final conference weekend against Kent State that helped Miami win the MAC Championship.

Buffalo senior Chris McGraw and Miami junior Graham Taylor share the East Division Co-Pitcher of the Week honor. McGraw and Taylor both pitched complete-game shutouts Saturday.

Bowling Green's Nolan Reimold was named the West Division Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. The junior outfielder hit .625 (5-for-8) on the week with three RBIs and scoring three runs-two of which were homeruns, which brings him to two short of Bowling Green's school record of 22.

Western Michigan's Dan O'Brien was named the West Division Pitcher of the Week. The sophomore pitched his first complete game Saturday against Bowling Green, allowing only one run.

MAC makes mark at NCAA Regional The Kent State men's golf team finished 17th in a three-way tie with Baylor and Texas Christian at the NCAA Central Regional at Notre Dame's Warren Golf Course Saturday.

The Golden Flashes had come into the final round Saturday with 1-under par as a team on the front nine holes, but finished the last nine holes 14-over as a team.

Kent State missed a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships by only five strokes, which were needed for the playoff for a 10th place finish. The top ten teams from the Regional advance to the NCAA Championship.

Eastern Michigan's Korey Mahoney finished in fourth place individually with a two-under par 208 at the par-70 Warren Golf Course, advancing to the NCAA Championship held June 1-4 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland.
