Softball teams gear up for MAC tournament

The Mid-American Conference softball tournament has arrived.

Year after year, athletes look forward to the Tournament, which gives teams a chance to prove that they dominate the MAC.

Unfortunately, Ohio will not be one of the tams competing in the postseason.

The MAC softball tournament only features the top eight teams in the conference, which is determined by the teams' conference schedule during regular season. Ohio is one of the five teams that will not be participating this year in the tournament, due to its standings in the East Division. The Bobcats finished last this year in the East Division and overall with a 4-18 conference record.

Making the cut, and leading the pack, is number one seeded Marshall, which will take on eighth seeded Kent State in the first day of tournament play along with number three Miami, taking on six seed Bowling Green.

Also playing in tournament play on the first day is number two seed Central Michigan taking on seventh seed Eastern Michigan and number four seed Western Michigan competing against fifth seeded Buffalo.

The teams will see themselves divided up into the loser of the games and on the first day play each other. The same will be for the winners during the second and third day of the tournament, with the championship game being played on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The double-elimination tournament is being held at 11 a.m. today at Firestone Stadium in Akron this year.

RedHawk pitcher gaining national recognition Miami's leading baseball pitcher was recently invited to USA Baseball National Team trials, along with 12 other collegiate baseball athletes.

Keith Weiser is the first RedHawk to be invited to the trials since the inception of Team USA in 1984.

The sophomore pitcher, who has accepted the invitation, leads Miami with a 6-0 record and a 2.15 ERA. Weiser has struck out 56 batters in 67 innings and has allowed only a .236 hitting average for opposing hitters.

The RedHawk is second in the MAC in wins and ERA and was also an 18th-round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves in 2003, before playing collegiate baseball.

USA Baseball will announce two more lists of players to invite to the tryouts, which will bring the participants total to 36, before the actual trial for the baseball team starts. The trials will be held from June 27-30 in Raleigh, N.C. and the roster will be announced July 1, with only 20 names.

The team will then participate in the 34th Annual USA versus Japan Collegiate Championship series in Japan and a Friendship Series versus Chinese Taipei in Taiwan. The team will also play six home exhibition games at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
