Tanning has both critics, fans

Summer is approaching rapidly and Ohio University students are outside taking full advantage of the warm weather and tanning opportunities.

I'd say I lay out about two times a week

said OU sophomore DL Casto. I wear sun block but I still get burned every time. I sort of worry about the damage being done to my skin but at the same time

I just want to get a tan.

Not only are students spending time in the sun, but they are also going to local tanning beds to achieve the perfect bronzed skin tone.

I lay out when it's nice outside and I have time

said OU freshman Zoe Heim. I don't go to the tanning bed often

but on occasion I go when I don't have time to lay out or an important event like a wedding or formal is coming up.

Even though she tans, Heim said she does worry about what the UV rays are doing to her skin.

When I go to the tanning bed

I don't go in the full time

she said. I feel that tanning is all right if you take precautions. It can help your skin

but it is very important to be careful.

Randall Hyde, the owner of Endless Rayz Tanning Salon, 77 1/2 E. State St., in Athens, said he feels going to a tanning bed is safer than tanning outside for various reasons.

In Ohio

tanning beds are totally regulated by the State Board of Cosmetology

he said. Tanning beds are safer than tanning outside because they control sun exposure and mainly emit UVA rays as opposed to harmful UVB rays.

There are many benefits of tanning, including getting needed Vitamin D, Hyde said.

It also helps with your complexion
