Vibrating condoms create buzz with students

A new sex toy boasts protection and pleasure enhancement.

The vibrating condom won the highest award at the Geneva Inventions Fair in 2004. Touch Me New Sensations released the first pressure-sensitive version on spring breaks, where 50,000 were handed out, said Todd Davis, president and founder of Premier Event and Tours, a sponsorship company for corporate organizations.

There was a lot of buzz about the beach about these vibrating condoms

Davis said.

The FDA-approved vibrating apparatus is attached to a ring that fits over the optional condom. It can turn on and off like a watch dial, and also is activated by pressure. The ring can be reused more than once, but the battery only lasts about 20 minutes. The lubricated latex condom, comes separately with the product.

College students are the company's target market, said Barry Hermanson, owner and creator of Touch Me. The company plans to do college promotions, possibly with AIDS awareness groups.

The company facilitated competitions on the beach, such as which-couple-can-get-the-condom-on-the-banana-fastest. Davis said it is a good way to break down barriers with people, particularly about using protection.

Women were more excited than the men, Davis said. While it was designed more for the female, it increases stimulation for the guy as well.

It was like the silver bullet with sex put together without having to put your hand there holding it said Christyn, an OU student who tried it out during spring break. The vibrating condom is definitely not something to try with someone you are not comfortable with, she said.

Davis, who has tried the product with his fiancé, said it takes extra time to figure out how to make the product work.

Sometimes guys say they don't need a vibrating massager, but in reality those guys are chasing us down 20 minutes later to get one he said. Eighty-seven percent of the people that heard of it in an informal survey on the beach wanted to purchase it, Davis said.

The first vibrating condom manufactured in the United States was made by a company called ViCon, and is similar to the Touch Me, but is not pressure sensitive. Hermanson hoped to improve on this model after seeing the condom at the inventions fair, he said.

Christyn said she used the on-off switch rather than the pressure sensor.

The vibrating condoms can be purchased at some independent stores as well as online at www.touchmeusa.com or www.ripnroll.com. They cost between $5 and $10 each.

I definitely think it's the worth the money

Christyn said.
