With reservations

Ohio University students are seemingly always faced with the same choice at Student Senate election time -stick with the status quo, or go with the unproven. Invariably they seem to choose the former, which is precisely what they should do in this particular election. But that doesn't make the process -or the choice -any more appealing than it was last year.

Vision, which is essentially the same incarnation of the previous two big winners -Voice and Driven -is our pick for Student Senate. A stacked deck of 33 candidates, Vision is experienced in the ways of senate and has a realistic view of what senate can and cannot do. Vision also did not give the standard senatorial candidate's line about becoming more visible on campus -executive candidates said they prefer action as opposed to publicity, which will hopefully be a noble promise that lasts into an actual administration.

The Vision juggernaut's only major competition is OUnity, a slate of nine candidates who mean well but who are so out of the loop and lacking in specific objectives that we simply cannot give them our backing, however tempting their fresh perspective may appear.

Whoever wins the election needs to make Senate a viable entity. That means fewer proclamations about the awfulness of the Academic Bill of Rights, the Ohio Patriot Act and other statewide issues and more focus on what the organization can do locally for students.

In order to prevent students from having this same choice next year, the opposition parties that will inevitably surface then -be they some version of OUnity or otherwise -should start learning about senate and OU now. That would allow them to serve as a more well informed -and therefore more viable -alternative to whatever super party inevitably follows Vision.
