After a 3-game weekend against the Lima Locos resulting in two wins and a loss, the Copperheads were back at it again Tuesday against the Delaware Cows. Prior to the game, rain began to pour upon Bob Wren Field, but as the game began, the Copperheads poured on the runs en route to a 10-2 decision against the Cows.
The Copperheads often have been able to score in the first inning, and today was no exception -they began the game with an impressive six runs. Ryan Peisel, East Carolina, and Matt Stiffler, Ohio, each contributed to the scoring by hitting RBI-singles. The Cows did not start off as well, committing two errors in the first inning.
Solid hitting came from Dennis Winn, Western Kentucky, and Peisel, as they both were 3-4 in the game. Peisel brought in three runs and hit a double, bringing his season average to .481. Winn, who is batting .455, recorded his first homer with a blast over the left-center wall in the seventh.
With the offense once again starting out strong, the pitching of Jon Oliver, Wooster, was ferocious; he gave up only two runs and four hits, also striking out four players in his six innings pitched. Brant Spring and Aaron Miller -the duo from Lynn University -continued to improve on their season, keeping the Cows hitless throughout the rest of the game.
The Copperheads now have a record of 7-8 for the season and are sitting 5th in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League standings. They play the Columbus All-Stars, who currently rank 1st place, on June 29. They return to the road to play the Cows on the 30th.
Also this week, pitcher Troy Testerman was named the GLSCL Pitcher of the Week for June 20-26. He was 2-0 in the week's outings, allowing only one run and six hits. His season era is 1.02.
