Athens City Council members said they hope to finish discussions this summer about the proposed Stimson Avenue retirement center and pass a number of ordinances related to Halloween.
(The retirement center is) probably the biggest thing on the agenda this summer
said Carol Patterson, D-2nd Ward. There's a lot of stuff that I would refer to as housekeeping that needs to be done before the fall.
Council will meet in committee June 13 to discuss the center, said Dale Tampke, D-at-large. At the meeting, council will consider changes made to the retirement center proposal made at a May 18 work session.
Council also will be discussing Halloween this summer. Every year, council passes a number of ordinances and other legislation to set up for Halloween, Patterson said.
Included among the ordinances are street closure ordinances, noise ordinances, organizational ordinances and permission for the band stands on Court Street.
The Planning and Development Committee will be looking at the Wellhead protection area, the area surrounding Athens' water supply, said Jim Sands, D-at-large. Council will vote on making that area an overlay zone in the city code, he said. Making the area an overlay zone will allow council to create specialized zoning regulations related to the water supply.
The Planning and Development Committee also will consider the request of one R3 neighborhood in Athens to become an R1 neighborhood.
R1 zoning allows for only single-family residences and limits rental properties to three occupants. R3 zoning is more liberal and allows for a variety of housing.
This is a contentious situation said Nancy Bain, D-3rd Ward.
Council also will evaluate the Athens budget this summer.
We typically look at the budget halfway though the year Tampke said.
Council will remain in session through the month of July and will take a recess in August.
We usually keep pretty busy
Bain said. We just kind of mop up some of the things we have had on the agenda so far.
