Nelsonville Council appoints new member to fill vacancy

Nelsonville City Council will see a new face in council chambers.

Council President Clinton Stanley appointed Bob Baughman Friday to fill John Reynolds' vacated council position.

Stanley appointed Baughman because council was unable to reach a consensus to elect a new member within 30 days of Reynolds' resignation. Reynolds resigned for personal reasons April 26.

We were split on who we wanted to see on council

Councilman Bill Wend said.

Anita Winner and Charlie Pancake originally were nominated for the position; council voted 3-3. However, Pancake did not stay in the race because of health reasons, Wend said.

Stanley nominated Baughman at Nelsonville's City Council meeting Monday, said Greg Smith, council vice president.

He has a lot of professional knowledge ... he brings a lot to the table Smith said, regarding Baughman's qualifications for the position.

Baughman has been living in Nelsonville since he first attended Hocking College in 1972 and was the city water and sewer distribution supervisor. He is now a systems operator for Trimble Township's waste water system.

I've seen things from the inside Baughman said of his experience working in Nelsonville. Baughman said he hopes to make significant contributions to council but one person can't do it all.

My feeling is that the top agendas at this point are economic development and good planning

Wend said concerning the direction of city council. I hope Bob can come in with a good attitude and understand these issues.

Winner had been nominated for the position by Councilwoman Anita Mondo -Wend seconded her nomination. Winner, a retired registered nurse of more than 30 years, owns Busy Bobbins, a folk-art and bobbin-lace business on the square in Nelsonville.

I wish him lots of luck

Winner said.

Despite the outcome, Winner plans to continue to play an active role in city council.

I am looking forward to the elections in November

and I am planning to run (for a city council member position)

she said.

Stanley was unavailable for comment.
