The Ohio University Board of Trustees will meet today and tomorrow and should approve a new women's studies major, administration salaries and changes to OU's sexual harassment policy.
According to the meeting's agenda, the trustees are expected to approve three new degrees: a bachelor of arts degree in women's studies, a doctor of philosophy degree in civil engineering and a master of science degree in biomedical engineering.
Also, a new sexual harassment policy is awaiting approval at the meeting. The new policy to be implemented in September is a result of recent incidents at OU and the increased clarification of sexual harassment in the law. The new policy includes definitions of misconduct, information on confidentiality of complaints, outlines possible sanctions and how to file a report. Campus-wide training and education is planned on the new policy.
The agenda also shows that OU President Roderick McDavis is expected to give final approval for the Mill Street Apartments to be leased to Wesam Construction Inc. The lease will be for 30 years with an option to extend it for 10 more years. Wesam would pay OU $300,000 initially, scheduled fixed payments thereafter and 10 percent of the net operating income. The lease also requires the apartments to use OU's electric services.
According to the Current Funds Budget, the total expected revenue collected from the Athens campus for the 2005-2006 school year would be about $319 million. A shortfall of $7.2 million, compared to last year, is expected.
Construction plans for next year also will be approved at the meeting. These include the renovation of Lin Hall's second floor for the Kennedy Museum to use as a library and education room; the rehabilitation of Lausche Heating Plant; and the construction of the Lancaster Community Events and Conference Center.
Governor Bob Taft announced Monday that the board would have a new member -Norman Dewire, who retired as president of the Methodist Theological School in Delaware. Dewire, from Delaware, earned a bachelor's degree in education from OU. He replaces M. Lee Ong, whose term has expired.
The trustees' next meetings will be Sept. 8 and 9.
