Even though Sunday's rainy weather caused a delay, it did not stop MLB scouts and more than 500 fans from enjoying the competitive Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League All-Star game that ended in a 4-2 decision with the Blue Team beating the Red Team at OU's Bob Wren Stadium.
The league divided its All-Stars into the two different teams. The selection committee and coaches nominate and select the players that will fill the rosters. This season, six Southern Ohio Copperheads were invited to play for the Blue Team. The four infielders selected were Paul Bennett, Elon; Ryan Peisel, E. Carolina; Mike Folli , Buffalo; and Dennis Winn, W. Kentucky. Troy Testerman, Denison, and Richie Fralick, Ball State, were two Copperheads pitchers selected for the team. Both also have been GLSCL Pitchers of the Week during the season. Coach Andrew See was an assistant manager for the game.
Bennett, who was the only Copperheads starter, played shortstop and outfield during the game and batted 1-3. Winn played third base and was 1-2 at bat.
The Blue Team took a commanding lead early in the game, scoring three runs in the first two innings. Josh Doane, Indianapolis Servants, hit a homer with a runner on base to make the score 2-0 in the first inning. He later went on to be crowned the game's MVP.
Doane's All-Star teammates, Ben Gaal, Grand Lake Mariners, Nathan Colclasure, Indianapolis Servants, and Copperhead Bennett, contributed to the score in the second inning. Gaal hit a single and then advanced to third when an error was committed while Colclasure was up to bat, giving him the chance to reach first. Bennett hit a grounder, causing a double play, but Gaal was able to make it to home plate to bring the score to 3-0.
Pitchers selected for the All-Star game each pitched one inning. Copperheads pitchers Testerman and Fralick came in during the final innings. Testerman appeared in the sixth and gave up one walk and no hits. Fralick relieved him in the seventh and performed well, giving up one walk, no hits and getting a strikeout.
The Copperheads All-Stars join their team again this weekend as they host the Grand Lake Mariners for a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 5:30 p.m., and Sunday's game begins at 1:00 p.m. All games will be played at Bob Wren Stadium.
