Raymond Tymas-Jones, Ohio University's dean of the College of Fine Arts, resigned last week, marking the fourth dean to resign this year.
The resignation was a result of a career opportunity for Tymas-Jones that had arisen at University of Utah.
I'll be the associate vice president for the arts as well as the dean for the College of Fine Arts there
Tymas-Jones said. (It's) kind of a dual position.
Tymas-Jones has been dean of OU's College of Fine Arts since 1998, and has had a variety of accomplishments within his tenure at the university.
His accomplishments include hiring African-art specialists for each of the schools within the college, with the exception of the School of Art. Tymas-Jones said he was in the process of obtaining one such specialist for the school when the job opportunity at University of Utah arose. Additionally, he has instituted an interdisciplinary arts and technology lab that provides aesthetic technology opportunities to students with the help of a grant from the Ohio Board of Regents.
We have also extended support for our ceramics program that is ranked fifth in the country Tymas-Jones said. The kilns and other equipment were updated when the program was awarded the 1804 Grant. The College of Fine Arts matched the grant funds in an attempt to maintain the stature of the program he said.
Tymas-Jones said he has found -through these programs and others -that the faculty and administration at OU are dedicated to the culture of the community
as well as the students. That dedication is the biggest reason why he will miss his colleagues after moving to Utah, he said.
An interim dean is anticipated to be in place by the beginning of the 2005-06 academic year. A national search will be conducted for a full-time dean, who should be in place by July 1, 2006, said Jack Jeffery, OU spokesman.
