Boogie on the Bricks, the latest in Uptown Athens street festivals, debuts this Saturday on Court Street between Washington and State streets.
Ric Wasserman, chairman of the Boogie on the Bricks committee, said he hopes the show will become an annual event drawing out-of-town residents to Athens. This year's Boogie on the Bricks has more of a local edge, he said.
The schedule for the event is available at the event's Web site, http://www.boogieonthebricks.com . Local musicians are slated to perform, including J.D. Hutchison, The Stella Trio, Slaughter Drive and the Slater Brothers Blues Band. The Scotty Bratcher Band, led by Bratcher, who performed last year at The Blue Gator, is the only non-local artist performing. Josh Brown, stage manager for Boogie on the Bricks, compared Bratcher's sound to Stevie Ray Vaughn. Funk band The Royales will close out the night with a performance scheduled for 8:55 p.m.
Brown said the stage will be set up in front of UniversiTees on Court Street, in order to accommodate viewers from the Beer Garden, located in the parking lot next to Attractions Tanning Salon. Alcohol will be limited to that area, he said.
Festivities begin at 2 p.m., though the utilized section of Court Street will be closed from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. Saturday. A children's recreation area will be located in a secure parking lot behind the Court Street Diner, Wasserman said. Featured food will include traditional summer fare such as hot dogs and hamburgers as well as some special items, including ribs from the Pigskin.
Brown said they will make any weather-related cancellations Saturday morning and will inform the public through radio announcements if the festival has to be cancelled.
