University names interim dean for fine arts

Charles McWeeny, associate dean for Ohio University's college of fine arts for the past four years, has been appointed interim dean effective August 1.

McWeeny replaces Raymond Tymas-Jones, who accepted a position at the University of Utah as associate vice president for the arts and dean of the college of fine arts. Tymas-Jones' resignation, effective Aug. 31, ends his seven-year run as dean of the College of Fine Arts at OU.

McWeeny became a part of OU's College of Fine Arts in 1983 in the ceramics department after completing his bachelor's degree at Cleveland State University and master's degree at the University of Oklahoma. He became a professor in 1997 before being named graduate chair of the School of Art in 1998.

McWeeny, who earned $69,217 in his former position, has served as the associate dean since 2001. Tymas-Jones earned $152,448 as dean of the college.

I am honored to be selected

McWeeny said. The college has many excellent faculty students and programs that I look forward to promoting and assisting. I also feel a significant responsibility to the institution to assure the integration of the strategic plan with the professional mission in the college.

As interim dean, McWeeny plans to navigate the college through the strategic planning process. There are a number of initiatives underway that he would like to see through to a resolution, McWeeny said.

McWeeny has seen success in his art career, exhibiting his ceramic installations and sculptures both nationally and internationally. In 1997 and 1999, he received Individual Artist Fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council and has lectured and conducted demonstrations at more than 20 schools and conferences.

McWeeny takes pride in his work, especially when working as a team with his colleagues in the School of Art and helping to build a nationally ranked ceramic program, he said.

My greatest accomplishment is the students that are a product of that program. I have many former students that are out in the world working to advance the arts through the production of their art works and through teaching the next generation of artists McWeeny said.

A national search will be conducted to identify a full-time dean, who is expected to be in place by the summer of 2006, said Jack Jeffery, OU spokesman.
