Northern Illinois quarterback Phil Horvath picked apart the Akron secondary in Saturday's game against the Zips, but it still was not enough.
Despite Horvath completing 75 percent of his passes, throwing for 486 yards and six touchdowns, the Huskies fell, 48-42, in overtime.
Horvath's 486 yards and six touchdowns are season-highs among Mid-American Conference quarterbacks. His lone interception of the game was in overtime and cost the Huskies a chance at the victory.
The Naperville, Ill., native currently has the third-most passing yards this season with 1,187, trailing only Sam Keller of Arizona State (1,443 yards) and Matt Moore of Oregon State (1,274 yards). His 11 touchdowns put him in a tie with Blake Powers of Indiana for fifth-best in the nation. MAC back in national spotlight A little less than two weeks after Ohio stunned Pittsburgh on ESPN2 and put the MAC on the map, Bowling Green traveled to Boise State for a Wednesday night match-up with the Broncos, which also was aired on ESPN2.
Unlike their fellow MAC school, the Falcons were not able to walk away with the win as Boise State cruised, 48-20.
Dark horse Heisman candidate Omar Jacobs was slowed down by the Broncos' defense, which frustrated him into completing only 50 percent of his passes for 220 yards. Jacobs has not had less than a 58 percent completion rate in a game, and his 220 yards were two more than his career low, which came in his first career start. Jacobs also threw for three touchdowns in the loss.
For those who just cannot get enough of the MAC on national television, there will be two games involving MAC teams this week - Toledo will play at Fresno State tonight, and Miami will host Cincinnati Wednesday night. Both games will be televised on ESPN2.
Owls prepare for entry into MAC The Temple Owls, who will be official members of the MAC in football in 2007, already have started playing MAC schools to prepare for the road ahead.
Going by what the Owls have done so far, it could be a bumpy road indeed.
Temple is 0-2 against the MAC so far this season after a 42-17 loss to Toledo and a 19-16 setback at the hands of Western Michigan.
Bowling Green will play host to Temple this Saturday in yet another MAC matchup for the Owls. They also will play host to Miami on Oct. 29 to round out their four-game slate against MAC opponents.
News and notes Bowling Green forward Omari Aldridge was named MAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week after scoring a goal and tallying an assist in the Falcons' double-overtime win over No. 11 Ohio State and scoring two goals in a 3-1 victory over Saint Mary's College.
Central Michigan defender Laura Gaesser was named MAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week after scoring two goals over the weekend, including the game-winning overtime goal against Ohio.
