Ohio women's cross country runner Andrea Maas won the second race of her collegiate career this weekend, taking the title at the Xavier Invitational and helping the Bobcats finish third out of four teams.
She won the 5K race with a time of 18:36, 12 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Kendra Churchill placed 10th with a career-best time of 20:04. It was her first collegiate career top-10 finish.
The coaches thought we performed well
and we are excited for the rest of the season she said.
Coach Clay Calkins said both Maas and Churchill performed well in the early-season meet.
Andrea ran a great race and Kendra Churchill ran great he said. We are looking for great things to come in the meets.
Laura Wetenkamp (17th), Alicia Myers (18th) and Celia Struble (19th) also contributed to the team's 91 points.
On the women's side, Ohio State won with 28 points, followed by host Xavier. Capital finished fourth.
The Ohio men also placed third this weekend, featuring a young lineup consisting of three freshmen, a sophomore and a senior. Five teams competed in the invitational.
It was a trial meet on the men's side
Calkins said. We wanted to see what they could do in a competition environment.
Shamus Eaton paced the Bobcat men, placing 12th with a time of 16:34.
It feels good to get my first race out of the way
he said.
Todd Holbrook was not far behind, completing the 5K course in 16:44, a 13th-place finish. Kevin Dean (19th), Todd Fraser (23rd) and Andy Bittner (25th) also contributed to the 65 points scored by the Ohio men.
Ohio State won the men's team competition with 15 points, followed by host Xavier. Rio Grande was fourth and Capital placed fifth.
Top-performer, Eaton, said the team ran well this weekend.
The guys did good
he said. This was a good first step to get experience.
