After last weekend's post-victory celebration that led to several student arrests and burned couches, Student Senate discussed a proposed ordinance in Athens City Council that would create a contract among off-campus students, landlords and the city.
Tim Vonville, city and county affairs senator, said it was too early for senate to take a position, but he said such an ordinance would be beneficial.
Basically
the goal is for tenants to know the rules and regulations so they can't claim ignorance Vonville said after the meeting. It sounds like a pretty positive thing especially after last weekend.
At last night's Student Senate meeting, a future Hurricane Katrina disaster fundraiser, improvements to on-campus safety and riot education were also proposed.
Ken Prabucki, residence life senator, said he is trying to organize a campus-wide penny war in an effort to raise money for disaster relief. Because he is a Resident Assistant, Prabucki said he would easily be able to organize such an effort, and has already contacted officials in Ohio University's Residence Life.
Molly Mayer, university life senator, proposed improvements to OU's blue emergency light system, which features blue-lit telephones on campus, and suggested a future riot education program at OU.
The senate meeting last night was also marked by some resignations and new additions to the governing body.
Student Senate Vice President Kate Kryder announced that Chief of Staff Carrie Martin resigned yesterday and said she hopes to fill the position by next week.
The positions of West Green Senator, vacated by Kristina Randall, and Fine Arts Senator, Lara Becker, were also opened to be filled later.
Three new commissioner positions have just been filled. Kathrina Maramba was introduced as the new International Affairs Senator, Gretchen Cataline was introduced as the new LGBT Senator and Samantha Flores was named Minority Affairs Senator.
Though all three new additions to Student Senate leadership have previously worked as senate interns, this is the first leadership position for all.
There is basically a new face to Student Senate this year
Vonville said later.
