Ohio volleyball 2004 alumna and two-time Mid-American Conference Player of the Year Laura Hageman returned to Athens Friday to watch her former team play.
Hageman, who was an All-America honorable mention and who played with the U.S. national team in Czechoslovakia during her senior year, led the Bobcats to win their first regular season title, MAC Tournament title, and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2003.
The former middle blocker remains the all-time leader in total blocks with 566, block assists with 436, and hitting percentage with .282. Holding third place ranks on other all-time lists, she claims 3,486 total attempts, 1,194 digs, 1,460 kills, 130 solo blocks, 3.15 career average kills per game and 1.22 career average blocks per game.
Middle blocker Julia Winkfield, who played with Hageman for two years, caught up with Hageman.
It was nice to see how she's doing
Winkfield said. She was talking about her wedding and that was exciting.
Winkfield and Carlston kept in touch with Hageman via e-mail while she played professionally in Finland last year. Carlston commented on the opportunity to have her at the game.
She's just a great ambassador to the program Carlston said.
Griffin receives MAC honor
Less than a week after being named the female MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week, middle blocker Melissa Griffin was named the East Division MAC Athlete of the Week Monday. Griffin received the second award for her performance Friday and Saturday. Tallying 30 kills against Akron and Buffalo, she tied her season-high 16 against Akron Friday and averaged 17.5 points and five kills per game.
She received the academic award for her overall academic performance and athletic performance during matches on Sept. 16-17. The hearing, speech and language sciences major was named to the Purdue Mortar Board Premier All-Tournament that weekend, where she recorded 12 kills, a season-high 6 blocks, and led the team with a .556 hitting percentage to beat No. 16 Tennessee.
Griffin spoke about receiving the awards.
I really didn't expect it because we all played so well
she said. I was happy about it
but I didn't expect it
especially the academic one.
Among the team she ranks second for blocks with 33 and .73 blocks per game. In other team categories, she ranks third with 163 kills and 3.62 kills per game.
Carlston commented on Griffin's academic and athletic performance.
We knew she would come around
Carlston said. We just needed to focus on her staying aggressive when she stepped into playing middle blocker from the right side. She's a coach's dream - 3.81 gpa and a tough competitor. It was nice to see her get her accolades
both on the court and in the classroom.
