Field hockey drops the ball

Bobcat forward Torrie Albini had another solid weekend for the Ohio field hockey team (8-11, 6-4 Mid-American Conference), posting three goals in two games. Unfortunately, that was not enough as the Bobcats dropped both contests this weekend.

However, thanks to a Miami loss Friday, Ohio had already clinched the No. 2 seed in the MAC tournament, which begins this Thursday, before it had even taken the field. The Bobcats will take on the winner of the No. 3 seed Miami and No. 6 seed Missouri State game Friday.

(The bye) is huge

it really is said coach Neil Macmillan. As a staff and as a team you get to watch the other teams play. So whichever team comes out of that first game we'll have a pretty good idea about. So that's a huge advantage as well as the rest factor.

Ohio fell to Central Michigan (8-11, 5-5 MAC) on Saturday in a back-and-forth game that ended 3-2 in favor of the Chippewas. Albini scored both Bobcat goals, with each coming off an Ohio penalty corner. Central Michigan answered Albini's goals, however, scoring off a penalty stroke at the 55:57 mark, which ensured the Chippewa victory.

The Bobcats were back in action the following day against No. 15 Michigan State (12-7), but fell 2-1 in a close, hard-fought contest. The game was tied at 1-1 until the Spartans scored inside the last three minutes of the game, stealing the win from Ohio. However, the Bobcats were pleased with their play in the losing effort.

Today's results were unfortunate. We should have taken them into overtime. We played probably one of our best games of the year in terms of play and everything goalkeeper Jen Cote said. Playing that game today and holding our own against a ranked team gives us even more confidence going into the tournament this weekend.

The Bobcats head back to Central Michigan for the MAC tournament Wednesday with the advantage that they have the Chippewa's field fresh in their minds. They will be seeking their first MAC tournament title since 2001.

We had some really great points in the season

and we had some games where we really didn't quite finish that last play

co-captain Lindsay Rothenberger said. It would be really great for us to come together for tournament and play like we can because there's no doubt in my mind that we can beat any team in the MAC when we're all playing together.
