October is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) History Month, and the LGBT Programs Center and various student groups have coordinated several events to raise awareness about LGBT history.
A poster campaign, OUTstanding, is a prominent feature of efforts to promote LGBT History Month.
The posters highlight famous people
past and present who are LGBT said Mickey Hart, coordinator of the LGBT Programs Center.
One poster features Melissa Etheridge, RuPaul Charles and artist Bernice Abbott.
The theme of the posters is 'Maybe history got things a little too straight
' Hart said. We think it's important to make people aware of accomplished
successful people who don't fit stereotypes of an LGBT person. They humanize LGBT issues.
Open Doors, a student group, will be coordinating Coming Out Week, Oct. 8 through 16, centered around National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11, Hart said.
On that day
LGBT people and their allies will be wearing T-shirts that say
'gay? fine by me.' Some people may take the opportunity to come out
Hart said.
On Oct. 18, the LGBT Programs Center will host a forum called Gods and Gays: Exploring LGBT Spirituality
which will explore different religious perspectives on homosexuality.
In a lot of our presentations
we don't talk much about religion because it is such a broad topic
Hart said. Some LGBT people embrace a religion
