Men's squad loses twice, women's results mixed

Saturday's contest between the Ohio women's swimming and diving team and the Toledo Rockets could not get any closer. The two teams ended the meet with a tie score of 149-149. In the final event of the meet, the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Bobcats took second and fourth in the event, while the Rockets won and also finished third. Emily Wylam had three career-best performances, winning the 100 (58.13 seconds) and 200 (2:05.40) backstroke and the 200 individual medley (2:09.29). Ilse Petersen added two more wins to her weekend total, finishing first in the 200 and 500 freestyle events against the Rockets. She was happy with her performances throughout the weekend, she said.

This is much better than I was doing last season for the first meet

she said. Courtney Gallo and Ashley Marion also won events for Ohio, the 1650 freestyle and 100 freestyle, respectively. The Bobcats started off the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 400 medley relay. The team of Wylam, Petersen, Michaela Hahn-Lawson and Lindsey DeStefano touched the wall first in 3:55.73. Jessica Orlov was second in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events for the Bobcats.

On Friday both the men's and the women's teams fell to Eastern Michigan by scores of 168-59 and 141-102, respectively.

Coach Greg Werner was happy with the swimmer's efforts despite the losses. He said that only freshmen swam for the Ohio men, so they did well against a strong Eagle squad for not being at full strength.

The team didn't use it as an excuse. We went after it anyways Werner said.

Freshman Charlie Sparks won the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:47.54. He also placed third in the 1000 freestyle (9:51.36). He said that his times were fast for this early in the season, yet trying to get the first-race jitters out of his system was rough.

I'm really glad that's over Sparks said. Jason Reutter also won an event versus Eastern Michigan. He took the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:13.12.

The women had five individual event winners and began the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay.

Werner said he is excited to see how the team performs in the next meet after working hard this week.

All in all

I'm very happy with our start and where we're at

he said.
