Ohio plays with 'moxie' to improve to 10-0 in MAC

The Ohio women's volleyball team's play has been described in a lot of ways, but a new word was added to the list of adjectives this weekend.

Moxie.

The No. 22 Bobcats (20-2, 10-0 Mid-American Conference) earned this description after facing two of the toughest conference matches this season when they played Western Michigan and Northern Illinois on the road.

Friday night the Bobcats grinded out a 3-0 sweep over the Broncos after a tough first game where the Bobcats won 35-33 in extra points and went on to win the next two games 30-19 and 30-26.

After we beat Western Michigan

we were told we played with a lot of moxie middle blocker Melissa Griffin said. We played with great resiliency and we had to dig deeper than usual on the road to pull through.

The following night, the Bobcats started out slow again and lost their first game in MAC play to the Huskies 27-30. But the Bobcats mustered up some more of the newly learned word and won the next three games 30-17, 30-20 and 30-18 to take the match.

Northern came out with a lot energy and played well

Coach Geoff Carlston said. They got us on our heels a little bit

because we haven't been starting out strong on the road.

Carlston and his players said that the main reason they lost the first game was because of how the Huskies outplayed them on defense.

They definitely outplayed us defensively

they were scrapping us and came out swinging and we weren't ready

Griffin said. We came in with a nonchalant attitude and we had to change that

we realized we can't just come into gyms and assume we will play well

we have to have the right mentality as well as physical preparation.

In game one

Northern just out-worked us

Carlston said. And as a coach
