The Montgomery County Coroner's Office has determined the cause of death of an 8-month-old infant who reportedly died after being left in a car for several hours.
The infant's preliminary cause of death has been ruled as significant dehydration
but the final determination of the cause and matter of death will not be made for four to eight weeks when an autopsy on the infant will be completed, according to a press release issued yesterday by the Athens County Coroner's Office.
Jeffrey Winkenwerder, 32, of Albany took his son at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday to the emergency department at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, according to a news release issued by the Athens Police Department.
It has been reported that Winkenwerder, who is the general manager at the Ohio University Inn & Conference Center, accidentally left the child in his car while he was at work and did not discover he had done so until the end of the day. However, repeated attempts by Post reporters to confirm these reports were unsuccessful. Officials from the Athens Police Department referred questions to Athens County Coroner Dr. Scott Jenkinson, but Jenkinson could not be reached for comment.
Winkenwerder is currently at home with his family, and inn officials said they do not know when he will return to work.
We have experienced a very tragic event with Mr. Winkenwerder and his son said Jack Warner, who is acting as general manager in Winkenwerder's absence. I don't know too much more right now.
