Program educates new greeks

A new program for recent recruits to Ohio University fraternities and sororities is designed to educate them on fundamentals of greek life, and it held its first session Tuesday night.

The Greek Community New Member Education Program consists of three sessions a quarter and is mandatory for all new members of both OU's Women's Pan-Hellenic Association and Interfraternity Council, said Tom Healy, IFC president. The new program is designed to support programs conducted in each chapter, and the cost is split between the Department of Health Education and Wellness and greek life, he said.

The purpose (of the program) is to educate all of our new members on topics relevant to them. It is a big movement in the right direction for us

Healy said. It creates a sense of community between members of greek life.

During the session in Baker Center Ballroom, members of IFC and WPA, Dean of Students Terry Hogan and Director of Student Activities Anne Lombard presented information on academics, civic responsibility and greek life to new members of the 31 WPA and IFC chapters.

At Tuesday's session, Hogan congratulated new members on their decision to join the greek community, challenged them to look for leadership opportunities and reminded them of the importance of academic achievement.

You have a very special opportunity but that comes with a special set of obligations Hogan said.

Lombard said she thought the first night of the program was a success, adding that in past years, similar programs took place only once a year and were not as effective or comprehensive.

The other sessions this quarter are October 25 and November 1 and will focus on health and wellness, leadership and involvement opportunities on campus. At the Oct. 25 session in the Walter Hall Rotunda, OU President Roderick McDavis will speak about community expectations.
