Women's soccer fittingly ends season with a loss

The Ohio soccer team wrapped up its 2005 season Friday at Akron with yet another loss.

The Bobcats were unable to put a shot on goal in a battle between two teams with no chance of making the Mid-American Conference tournament. The Zips (5-11-2, 3-7-1 MAC) collected a season-high three goals while the Bobcats (3-14, 1-10 MAC) were shut out for the seventh time this season in the 3-0 defeat.

Akron took control of the contest early when Akron midfielder Jessica Fix knocked a shot past goalkeeper Katie Overmann in the 3rd minute to go up 1-0. Akron would then add insurance goals in the 35th and 76th minutes to win the contest in dominating fashion.

The Bobcats finished the season with nine straight losses. The loss also marks the first time Ohio has lost to Akron. The Bobcats had shut out the Zips in the two teams' previous four matches.

Starting in her seventh game as the Bobcats goalkeeper, Overmann collected two saves in the loss. Ohio was decimated by injuries at the goalkeeper position for the second half of the season. The Bobcats were without backup Caity Waites for the entire season because of injuries sustained in a summer car accident. After starter Melissa Parra left the team for personal reasons, the team brought sophomore Kieniele King back on the roster to become the team's starter. That experiment would only last one game, however, after she aggravated a hip flexor injury. Overmann, formerly a redshirt freshman midfielder, was then handed the starting position and kept goal for the remainder of the season.

Forward Lindsey Price finished the season as the team leader in goals with five and total points with 13. The Bobcats also got strong performances out of its freshman class. Forward Maggie Rojas-Alford netted four goals in her freshman campaign, which was good for second on the team. Midfielders Erika Schmitt and Erika Dietz each collected their first collegiate goals in their first season with the team.

Friday's contest was the final game in an Ohio uniform for co-captains Sara Williams and Crystal Reed, forward Amy Elrod and midfielder Holly Hinman. xt>- Andrew Gribble,",17,Archives,",",",",",",","
