'Oddball' offers entertaining anecdotes

Usually I don't find myself alone laughing out loud at 2:30 a.m. on a Tuesday, but the New York Times best-selling author Augusten Burroughs' new book of personal essays and true stories, Magical Thinking

made me do just that.

Very few writers can write with such blatant honesty, humor and wit, and very few people can attest to being raised by their mother's psychiatrist or to having an intimate fling with an undertaker in the viewing parlor where Rose Kennedy's wake took place.

In the chapter Holy Blow Job he describes having the best sexual encounters of his life with Catholic priests.

Though Burroughs might sound like a grotesque oddball, he connects with his audience with great storytelling and his ability to put everything out on the table in a warm, entertaining manner.

Even his most mundane experiences, such as house-hunting, pest-killing and household-shopping seemwildly amusing.

With his off-beat perspective, Burroughs takes the reader through the journey of his zany life from childhood to gay bars to manipulating housekeepers to falling in love.

Anyone looking for a laugh and an escape from their life needs to read about Burroughs in Magical Thinking.
