As a long-time supporter of many of our university's sports programs, I would like to encourage the Athens and Ohio University communities to come pay tribute to the wonderful season our women's volleyball program enjoyed this past year as they are honored just before Sunday's men's basketball game against Miami.
The national recognition that the program and the university has received because of this team's accomplishments is a perfect illustration of President McDavis' vision that athletics can be a window into the university.
A friendly recap of the team's recent accomplishments includes the nation's longest home-court winning streak, a 36-match winning streak against MAC conference opponents and a 57-1 MAC record the past three seasons. The team has won three straight MAC regular season and tournament championships (not bad considering the team had not finished higher than 4th in the regular season in over two decades).
Finally, in the NCAA Tournament the team advanced to the Sweet 16, beating Alabama and Ohio State along the way, and finished the year ranked 14th out of 315 Division I programs.
So, when making those plans to come out on Sunday to support our men's basketball team as they face Miami, don't forget to arrive a little early for the well-deserved celebration of the Lady Bobcat volleyball team.
