Scott Mayle continued to shine for the Bobcats this weekend, winning the long jump at Saturday's unscored Ohio State Invitational.
His jump of 7.61-meters was Mayle's longest of the year, but more importantly it set him up for a possible berth at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Scott Mayle hit the provisional mark for nationals
coach Clay Calkins said. Now he gets put on a descending order list and (the NCAA) takes the top 16 from that list. Once the last indoor qualifying meet happens if he is one of the top 16 people
then he gets to go.
The performance, netting the only first-place finish of the day for Ohio, was key both for the team and for Mayle himself.
It's pretty important
Mayle said. It takes a little pressure off of the rest of the season. I just need to stay healthy and keep competing as well as I'm doing.
The field events for the men's team earned a total of seven top-three finishes. Tyler Edwards and Bryan Miller finished second and third, respectively, in the long jump as Ohio swept the top three spots in the event.
Luke High finished second in the triple jump while Jeremy Keesee tied for second in the high jump. Kyle Burns finished third in the pole vault with a height of 4.4-meters.
On the women's side, Jaclyn Lugaila continued her march toward the Mid-American Conference Championships with a second place finish in the shot put. Her throw of 14.13 meters established a new personal record, Calkins said.
The distance runners also had a solid day. Carime Reinhart finished second in the mile run while Andrea Maas, Rachel Beakas and Julia Weisenborn all finished in the top 10 in the 3,000-meter run.
Despite many of the distance runners not competing last week, they were still able to have success at the OSU Invitational.
Even if we don't run the week before
we always try and put our practices to good use
Weisenborn said. We were pretty well prepared; it's good to have a week off just so we can recuperate. Each meet takes a lot out of you.
The improving Bobcats travel to Kent State next weekend for the Central Collegiate Championships.
At this point
everyone is even farther than where I thought we'd be this time of year
Calkins said. We just got to keep moving forward.
