The Ohio swimming and diving team does not compete at the conference championships for another couple of months.
However, over winter break, the Bobcats got a chance to compete in a meet similar in format to that meet.
We definitely talked about that and asked them not to look at it as a mid-season meet
but as an end of the year meet even though it's happening mid-year said coach Greg Werner of the preparations for the meet. I thought they did a good job with that.
The Bobcats competed in this meet during their peak training and won five individual events and one relay over the three-day competition.
I was really
really happy
Werner said. It attributed to where we were at in our training already into some heavy holiday training. They exceeded my expectations by far.
The Bobcat men and women both placed fifth at the Summacare Invitational in Akron.
Hallie English, Ashley Marion, Sigal Simsolo and Ilse Petersen touched the wall first in the women's 800-yard freestyle relay with a team season-best time of 7:41.15.
Marion won the 400 individual medley and added a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley and finished fourth in the 100 freestyle.
Simsolo won the 200 backstroke with teammate Emily Wylam finishing third.
The Bobcats swept the 1650 freestyle, with Petersen winning the women's race and Charlie Sparks winning the men's race.
Petersen also took second in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Sparks was also third in the 500 freestyle.
Donald Jupp won the 50 freestyle by 2-hundreths of a second and finished third in the 100.
Jessica Orlov placed seventh in the 3-meter diving and 10th in the 1-meter diving, while teammate Jaime Acks finished 12th in the 3-meter and 14th in the 1-meter diving event.
I'm really proud of them being able to win when they weren't peaking for the meet and weren't as prepared as the other teams there and certainly use that as motivation instead of an excuse and came away on top
Werner said. That certainly is exciting and bodes well for the future.
After the meet, the Bobcats headed to Florida to train for a couple of weeks before enjoying some time off.
Werner said the team was excited about their holiday training and hopes to continue their hard work for the remainder of the season.
We look forward to continuing those efforts and the intensity and consistency that we've had up to this point
and without a doubt that's going to prepare us for bigger and better things
he said.
