Ohio meets Miami

The Ohio-Miami rivalry extends beyond the basketball court this weekend when the Ohio swimming and diving teams travel to Miami for their last road dual meet of the year.

Donald Jupp said this is always one of the biggest dual meets of the year for the Bobcats.

The Miami meet is the big rivalry meet

he said. We're going to show the new freshmen about how big a deal this is to us.

Coach Greg Werner said both the Miami men's and women's teams are strong in all events.

In the distance events, the Ohio men (2-3 overall, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) will face freestyler Paul Ricard, who currently holds the fastest time in the MAC this year in the 500 and 1000 freestyles.

The Miami women also currently have top times in the conference this year. Margaret Patrick currently has the fastest time in the MAC in the 50 freestyle, while Jenn Flaherty currently holds the top conference time in the 1000 and 1650 freestyle events. Diver Christin Eberst owns the top score in the three-meter event and is currently fifth in the one-meter event.

We'll have to be the best we've been all year if we want to come away with a win no doubt about it Werner said about how the team is going to have to swim this weekend.

Ashley Marion said the Ohio women (7-2-1, 3-3-1 MAC) have been preparing for this dual meet all year.

We're definitely going to be ready for them

she said. We've been training pretty much to race them. We definitely have the capability to beat them

and we want to.

Werner said that this meet will be good preparation for the women to compete on the road.

It's always tough when you're on the road

he said. But for the women in particular

championships are on the road

so they have to get used to swimming on the road.

The Ohio women have won three of their last four meets, including a win against Marshall on Tuesday. Last time out, the men beat Buffalo for their second win of the season.

The Bobcats renew their rivalry with the RedHawks at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford.
