The Ohio wrestling team went 2-1 in its dual meets this weekend in Buffalo, N.Y., falling to Mid-American Conference opponent Buffalo 25-9 in the first meet before defeating Ithaca, 25-15, and Delaware State, 51-0.
We beat two teams we were supposed to beat
Ohio coach Joel Greenlee said. I don't think we got it done against Buffalo ... I was disappointed with the way we wrestled at a bunch of weights.
Only 125-pound wrestler Caleb Metcalf and 141-pound wrestler Albert Madsen won their matches for the Bobcats (8-8, 1-2 MAC) against the Bulls (8-3, 1-1 MAC), with Metcalf posting his first of two pins on the weekend in his match against Evan Veney and Madsen taking a 6-2 decision against Cliff Smith.
In Ohio's second meet, against Ithaca, Metcalf jump-started the Bobcats' efforts by pinning Marcario Alvarez only 1:35 into the match. Since Jan. 22, Metcalf has gone 5-1 and recorded three falls.
I've been working really hard in practice to help me improve my game a little bit Metcalf, who was the only Bobcat to go 3-0 on the weekend, said. Some things I've had problems with are getting out of my stance and going forward on the whistle ... but beating these guys has helped my confidence level a lot.
Following the pin at 125-pounds, the Bobcats won the next three matches on their way to defeating Ithaca. At 133-pounds Terry Jackson recorded a fall at 3:43, followed by decisions at the 141- and 149-pound weight classes by Frank Brown and Aaron Gomoll, respectively.
After being on the losing end of several close matches recently, including a 0-1 loss to Buffalo's Pat Lloyd, Gomoll said he is feeling more confident.
I feel a lot better he said. I was just having some tough breaks the last few weeks. You just have to be confident in your own wrestling ability and not try to wrestle anyone else's match.
In Ohio's rout of Delaware State, Gomoll would take his second win of the weekend with a 11-3 major decision over the Hornets' Will Saylor, and it was Gomoll, specifically, who Greenlee said he was impressed with during the weekend.
Even though (Gomoll) lost to Buffalo - with one point at the end of the match - he goes out there wins against Ithaca and then beats the snot out of the Delaware State guy who beat the guy from Buffalo
Greenlee said. He needed to take some of the pressure off himself and go out there and have fun
and I think he did that.
Ohio will be on the road again as they travel to Blacksburg, Va., to face Virginia Tech on Saturday and then James Madison and Virginia on Sunday.
