Nathan Evans is a math teacher and assistant boys basketball coach at Warren High School. But unlike many math teachers, Evans is the lead singer in a rock band.
Flinch, a pop-punk band, has been performing around the area for five years, with two CDs already under its belt. Flinch's third CD will be unique and more mature, Evans said.
While the first two CDs were recorded in borrowed space, Evans decided to take a different approach to the band's newest project by building a personal studio in his parents' garage.
We figured if we had all the time in the world
we could make what we want Evans said. This attitude gave the band more room for experimentation on the album.
Since he was the only one with a job at the time, Evans took it upon himself to start building his dream. He researched online between classes then came home and build up to eight hours a day, a few days a week.
I had no idea what I was doing Evans said. It was a lot of making mistakes and going back and fixing them.
Flinch plans to finish recording in its new studio by the end of this month, with a CD release party in the works to take place in March in Athens.
Once we're done with the CD
I would be interested in getting other bands in to record
Evans said. But I'm not looking to compete with other studios in the area.
One band that has the new studio in mind is Athens-based Break of Day, which is shopping around this quarter for a studio in which to record a CD.
Nathan is a good musician
and we've played with Flinch before
said guitarist Ryan Lunka. He knows what he's doing
and we trust his opinions.
As for the day job, Evans said he would be willing to drop it in a heartbeat. He has always had dreams of becoming a rock star, and with local success, he plans to focus on performing and doing bigger tours.
I want to live like a rock star
and when I wear myself out
I'll go back to producing
Evans said. Music is my passion
