Acclaimed author encourages aspiring writers to 'just do it'

Author Jack Driscoll will be conducting a fiction reading from his new book, How Like an Angel

at Galbreath Chapel this evening. Driscoll is the award-winning author of several books and has another collection of short stories that will be finished in about two years. He sat down with The Post to answer a few questions.

The Post: Which of the characters that you have written most resembles you and why?

Driscoll: I think that they all do. There is something I can identify with in all of them. I would even argue that I think everything we write is somewhat autobiographical. I'm mostly talking about emotions here. The things that I feel passionate about, my characters feel passionate about as well.

The Post: Of all the things that you have written, of which are you most proud?

Driscoll: The new novel, How Like An Angel. We all want to believe that what we are currently producing is the best work we have ever done. This one is emotionally complex and is better than anything I have ever written before. But I won't say it is perfect. If something is perfect, then you will have no reason to continue writing.

The Post: Why do you think that it is important to do this type of fiction readings for student audiences?

Driscoll: The readings and the teachings are important because I want to be welcoming to aspiring writers. I was never encouraged when I was young. I want to encourage students to follow their hearts.

The Post: What advice would you give to an Ohio University students hoping to pursue a career in writing?

Driscoll: Just do it.
