In its last dual meet of the regular season, the Ohio wrestling team was shut out by No. 4 Central Michigan, 34-0.
The match marked the first time since Jan. 14, 2005, against then-No. 6 Nebraska that the Bobcats failed to register any team points.
The Bobcats (11-11, 1-4 Mid-American Conference) lost the individual matches by decision at every weight except 133-pound wrestler Terry Jackson's 13-1 major decision loss to No. 11-ranked Jason Borelli and 197-pounder Nick Terbay's fall at 2:07 to No. 1-ranked Wynn Michalak.
Ohio's closest match was 141-pound wrestler Albert Madsen's 9-7 loss against the Chippewas' (13-4, 5-0 MAC) No. 12-ranked Brandon Carter. Carter won the match by scoring a takedown with 15 seconds left, something coach Joel Greenlee said simply cannot happen.
I thought (Madsen) wrestled pretty well
but he needs to wrestle smarter Greenlee said. He led the match from start to finish and kind of blew it in the end. He got out scrambled and got stubborn and bull headed
and (Carter) scored on him once
and then Albert went back and did the same thing as before. Maybe he should have tried something different.
With two wins this weekend, the Chippewas claimed their eighth consecutive MAC regular season title, while Ohio finished fifth out of six MAC wrestling squads.
They now have two weeks until the conference tournament in DeKalb, Ill., on March 3-5, and Greenlee wants his team to focus less on trying to make the perfect shot and more on finding a sense of urgency in their matches.
We need to keep working on the same things we've been working on for the past few weeks
like scoring with 30 seconds or a minute to go in either the match or period
he said. I think our guys are looking for the perfect shot or open shot
and its just not always going to open up; you have to make it happen. It's not always going to be pretty
but we have to make something happen when there's short time left.
