Grad students urge class reform

The double-listing of courses for undergraduate and graduate programs can lead to inadequate expectations for graduate students, said Graduate Student Senate members at last night's meeting.

To ensure that professors follow guidelines established by Ohio University's University Curriculum Council, senate passed a resolution urging the council to improve the quality of the courses. The guidelines require a qualitative and quantitative difference in work expected of the graduate students... in double-listed classes.

In an October 2005 survey, 29 percent of 266 OU graduate students said the quality of their split courses are very poor

poor or mediocre according to the resolution.

The resolution does not offer specific solutions to the problem, but it does bring light to the problem, said Mark Mecum, senate president and resolution co-sponsor.

I thought it would be more effective that we just recognize it's a problem he said.

Senator Ananth Vadlamani also presented the final Ohio University Student Health Insurance Plans Comparison.

These are some of the solutions we've got to propose and discuss as a body next quarter

Vadlamani said.

Instead of having only two plans, domestic and international, this proposes four or five, including a basic plan, one that includes dental care and one that includes maternity or abortion care, he said.

A variety of coverage is necessary because all the coverage included in one plan may not be needed, he said.

Senate's health committee will make a list of suggested changes that they can vote on during Spring Quarter, Mecum said.

Senate also passed a resolution that establishes a procedure to choose the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Member Award.

Senate will conduct the procedure in four parts. Students will nominate an eligible faculty member by April 17 and from the nominations, the senate awards committee will choose up to 10 finalists by April 24, according to the resolution. Nominators will then be asked to provide more information on the finalists and the committee will choose and notify the recipient by June 1.
