Hometown swimmer reflects on life in Athens

Ohio freshman swimmer Sarah Vaughn, who has lived in Athens for the past four years, is preparing to compete in her first Mid-American Conference championships later this week. She took some time out to sit down with The Post's Julie Goldberg to talk about life in Athens, her favorite foods and soccer star David Beckham.

The Post:What made you decide to stay in Athens and go to OU?

Vaughn: I'm really close with my family. First and foremost, I really love the campus here. I really love the feel of Athens. It's very country, but yet you have the diversity of a big school. I really had a great relationship with the coach (Greg Werner) here before I even started swimming. He was a really good friend and really helped me through the whole process of looking at colleges. But in the end, I just realized what better person to coach me than a person that I already trust.

The Post: What are some things that you know about Athens living here year-round that students who are here for nine months of the year might not know?

Vaughn: It's really nice in the summer because there are parking spots uptown. In the summer, it just seems really relaxed and calmed down. There's a really good farmers market and I love going to that. There's nothing here to do that you would find in a big city and that's the appeal to me.

The Post: Do you have any superstitions?

Vaughn: I'm really close to my mom, and before every race I have to get the thumbs up from her because if I don't get the thumbs up then it's not good. I think it's really important for me and for her, too.

The Post: What do you like to do when you aren't in class or practicing?

Vaughn: Sleeping and eating. I really love downtime, just going into my room and laying down and watching TV. I love going home for the weekends and spending time with my family.

The Post: What is your favorite pre-race meal?

Vaughn: Just a big plate of spaghetti. Anything with a lot of carbs is good - and salad.

The Post: Are there any famous athletes that you want to meet, swimmer or non-swimmer?

Vaughn: I want to meet David Beckham because he is super hot.
