Swimming and Diving Preview: Bobcats set for championships

The long-standing swimming rivalry between Ohio and Miami will be renewed this weekend when the women's team travels to Akron for the Mid-American Conference Championships.

Ohio is looking to dethrone the RedHawks, who have won 16 total championships, including the last four MAC titles.

I think we have a chance to give Miami a big fight

said Ohio captain Ilse Petersen said. I mean there's other teams that are good but Miami is the main one.

Multiple Ohio swimmers enter the meet holding top times in the conference. Emily Wylam and Sigal Simsolo are among the top swimmers in both backstroke events. Karen Liddy has the leading conference time in the 200-yard breaststroke, while Ashley Marion holds the top-five conference time in both individual medley events. Petersen also enters the meet with top-10 conference times in four events.

Eastern Michigan is pretty good coach Greg Werner said. They came sneaking up on us there last year and almost got us and they beat us this year in a dual meet

so they're actually going into the meet ranked ahead of us.

Diving coach Russ Dekker said the diving events would also be very competitive this weekend.

I think Eastern Michigan has the advantage

Dekker said. Five of their six girls could easily make top eight. I think this year could be one of the deeper years

where 16th is going to be a lot harder to get into than it was last year.

Werner said the team has worked hard throughout the season and is confident entering the meet.

I know we're prepared

he said. We haven't cut any corners. I know we haven't shown the rest of the conference everything that we have

so in that regard we are excited to do that here and can't wait.

The 200 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving and 400 medley relay events are on today's schedule. Preliminaries start at 11 a.m. and finals start at 7 p.m. All events will take place in the Ocasek Natatorium on the Akron campus.
