Women place 2nd at tourney

With a victory in the final event of the evening, the Ohio women's swimming and diving team stands in second place after the first day of competition at the Mid-American Conference Championships Emily Wylam, Sarah Vaughn, Ashley Marion and Ilse Petersen set a pool record in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:47.73. The foursome finished more than two seconds ahead of Ball State in the event.

The 400-yard medley relay is one that we take a lot of pride in

coach Greg Werner said. We talked about that as a team that you always want to win the last event on the night because that sets you up for the next day and that gives you the momentum.

The Bobcats also had four swimmers score points in the 200 individual medley. Marion won the conference title in a personal best time of 2:04.04. Michaela Hahn-Lawson completed a 1-2 Ohio finish in the event. Emily Wylam and Ali Howell were fifth and 13th, respectively.

That was definitely our big event point-wise of the evening Werner said of the 200 individual medley event.

Petersen, Courtney Gallo, Lindsey DeStefano and Mallory Rico also contributed to the Bobcats' 170 first-day point total.

In the one-meter diving event, Jess Orlov and Jamie Acks, placed 18th and 21st, respectively.

They didn't have a great meet said diving coach Russ Dekker. Hopefully they let this go and perform better over the next two days.

Werner said the team is excited for tomorrow's events, as it will be the team's strongest day of the meet. We have the most opportunities that we have of any of our three days

he said. We're really planning on get up and going after it and showing everyone just how strong of a team we are.

Eastern Michigan leads with 228 points. Miami is third, only 7 points behind Ohio.

The 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 3-meter diving and 800 freestyle relay are on today's event schedule. Preliminaries start at 11 a.m., with a 7 p.m. start time scheduled for finals.
