CLEVELAND - As expected by many of her peers and opposing coaches, Ohio guard Rachel Frederick was named Mid-American Conference Women's Basketball Freshman of the Year on Tuesday night.
Her achievement makes her the first Bobcat to win the award since Caroline Mast did so in 1983. She also was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team earlier this week.
The Gibsonia, Pa., native scored 17 points in the Bobcats' 76-66 loss to Eastern Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament yesterday, giving her an average of 14.2 points per game for the season.
Frederick's season was highlighted by becoming the first Bobcat to record 300 points, 200 rebounds, and 50 steals in a single season since Nikki Smith did so in the 1991-92 season.
Despite the loss to the Eagles, Frederick enjoyed the opportunity to play in the big stage in Cleveland.
This was a great experience for me
Frederick said. It was awesome going into the locker room and seeing my name by the MAC emblem but I would've really liked to keep going.
Iglehart ends career with loss
Ohio's loss not only ended its 2005-06 season, but also the career of senior forward Ciara Iglehart.
Iglehart scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds in her collegiate finale, which ended prematurely with her fifth foul with just over a minute remaining in the ballgame.
She played two seasons with the Bobcats after transferring from Saddleback Community College of California, averaging 18 minutes and six points a game last year as a junior, following up by averaging 27.5 minutes and just under ten points a game this season.
Her highlight came in a Jan. 25 game against Western Michigan, in which she tallied a career-high 23 points.
I think I've had a good career at Ohio and my game improved Iglehart said. As a team
we've had our ups and downs together
and that just brought us closer.
Looking to next season
The Bobcats will be returning all but one letterwinner for next season's squad, that >being Iglehart.
Next year's team will be led by All-MAC honorable mention selections Frederick and Simone Redd, as well as Syracuse transfer Lauren Kohn, who was named to the Big East All-Freshman Team.
Kohn sat out this season due to NCAA transfer regulations.
