Police-community discussions need more student input

The Post was right.

There definitely were not enough students at the Community Police Dialogue last Friday. The organizers had invited five students who live in the Mill Street area, as well as students connected with the OU Office of Off Campus Living, students from churches and agencies in the student night life zone and activists from groups like Interact and the Wire.

So we were very surprised at the low student attendance? I checked back with some and found that the 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. time was not conducive to their participation. So, we are working to find a larger group of students for the Friday, March 10 Community Police Dialogue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Athens Recreation Building, Room A.

We did not have an open invitation to the event because of space and want to have representation on a somewhat equal basis from many groups of the community. But if there are OU or high school students who are interested in participating, please contact me at trisha@boochee.com and we will be very glad to include you and hear your ideas.

This event was conceived and carried out by citizens in People for Peace and Justice, and Athens Mediation Service, both working voluntarily to improve and broaden relations between police and townspeople so that our safety and well being are enhanced.

- Trisha Lachman is a Mill Street resident and mother of two OU graduates.
