Senior bobcat discusses hockey, airplanes, life after OU

Ohio club hockey senior Bob DiPippa transferred after his sophomore year from Duquesne University to play hockey at Ohio. He was force on the power-play and penalty kill. He is one of four departing seniors from this year's team that lost Friday night in the quarterfinals of the American Collegiate Hockey Association tournament. The Post's Corey Ryan talked with the senior aviation major about life after graduation, movies and how the Bobcats will do next season.

The Post: What are you going to miss most about hockey at OU?

Bob DiPippa: Probably playing at Bird Arena in front of all the fans and my teammates and my coaches. You go play at other arenas and then you play at Bird. It's pretty intense to have all of those people behind you in Bird.

The Post: As an aviation major, what are you going to do after graduation?

Bob DiPippa: I should graduate in the summer. I either plan on instructing or getting a job as at a regional airline. I'm training right now to be an instructor.

The Post: Have you seen the movie Top Gun?

Bob DiPippa: Yes, I have.

The Post: Do you see yourself as more of a Maverick or Goose?

Bob DiPippa: I'm more of a Maverick, I guess.

The Post: Which of your teammates would be Goose to your Maverick?

Bob DiPippa: I'd say either of my roommates, Ryan Baksh or Paul Warriner. They'd die in the end so I don't know.

The Post: Which movie did you like more, Mighty Ducks or Top Gun?

Bob DiPippa: I'd have to say Top Gun. Mighty Ducks is close behind. Top Gun is my favorite movie.

The Post: What persuaded you to get into aviation?

Bob DiPippa: Honestly, that movie. I was always fascinated with airplanes. The opportunity presented itself when I was a sophomore (at Duquesne) to come here and play hockey and I came here, got into the aviation program.

The Post: Are you going to stay involved with hockey or is your career over?

Bob DiPippa: I don't think I'll be involved with the hockey team, but if I'm in town I'm sure I'll go to the games. If opportunity presented itself to coach or help out somewhere, I'd consider it.

The Post: How will the team do next season?

Bob DiPippa: They should have a great team. They're going to be missing some penalty killers and grinders because that's what (the departing seniors) really did. As long as they use this year as motivation then they'll be on the right track. They have great leadership coming up next year.
